Target Zero

A new £1 million 'Target Zero' project is looking at five major building types (schools, warehouses, offices, supermarkets and mixed use) and will generate fully-costed solutions demonstrating how to achieve the three highest BREEAM ratings and meet the changes to Part L of the Building Regulations.

Steel by virtue of the market share it has and cost advantages, is the natural choice for all construction solutions from academic institutions, hospitals, housing accommodation through to offices and warehouses.  It has many inherent sustainable properties and is demonstrably well capable of being incorporated into structures of all types that produce the highest BREEAM ratings, as shown by the £1 million BCSA Zero Carbon project.

Market share
Cost effectiveness is one of the many advantages of structural steelwork. This position is reflected in the long established independent industry-standard survey, which has measured the relative market share of structural frames annually since 1980.

Cost comparisons
The latest cost comparison study of quarter 2, 2010 for commercial buildings continues to re-affirm that structural steel framing solutions are faster to build and more cost effective than reinforced concrete alternatives and have been so since the first study in 1993.

Steel prices
The long term competitiveness of steel has been achieved by a commitment to productivity and quality improvements achieved by investment in research and development, technical support for designers and in new fabricating technology across the constructional steelwork sector.
