Responsible Painting Coordinator Training Course (RPC)

A recent concern for the BCSA was that existing training courses for paint inspectors and technicians were not ideal for structural fabricators.
The BCSA also felt there was a need to raise the bar regarding the knowledge of protective and intumescent coatings and their application, as appropriate training could help reduce failures and potential claims.

RPC course content

Over the three days, content will be delivered in a number of ways. There will be classroom lectures covering both theory and practicalities and hands-on use of essential test instruments which are routinely used by structural steel fabricators, inspectors, and specifiers for their projects.

The new RPC course follows the BCSA’s National Structural Steelwork Specification for Building Construction (NSSS) 7th Edition, Section 10: Protective Treatment (Corrosion & Fire) and the Commentary on coatings and intumescent. It adopts the use of relevant European Standards, such as ISO 8501-1, ISO 12944-2017, ISO 19840 for DFT’s and EN 16623 for intumescent testing and evaluation.

Subjects covered are:

  • Corrosion – a basic understanding.
  • Environmental testing and use of instruments.
  • Surface preparation, surface profile measurement, and relevant test methods.
  • Coating fundamentals and calculating paint consumption
  • Intumescent fundamentals and the legal obligations
  • Application methods – airless spray • Wet and dry film measurement and practical use of WFT & DFT gauges.
  • Adhesion testing.
  • The Paint Specification - its essentials.
  • Safety, Health and Environment – the basics

At the end of the course, there is a 75 question, multiple choice exam as well as a Practical exam, which are both accredited and certified by BCSA. The pass mark is 70%. The exams are not mandatory, so individuals who just want the training without the certification are also welcome; a Certificate of Attendance is provided.
